Sands China Earns ISO Certification for Occupational Health and Safety
Company’s fifth ISO certification
(Macao,
May
30, 2019) –
Sands China Ltd. has
earned a new ISO certification for its
occupational health and safety (OHS)
measures, making it the fifth ISO
certification received by the company to
date.
The ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health &
Safety Management System certification seeks
to reduce occupational injuries and diseases
through measures such as eliminating hazards
and minimising OHS risks.
ISO 45001:2018 specifies requirements for an
OHS management system and gives guidance for
its use, enabling organisations to provide
safe and healthy workplaces by preventing
work-related injury and ill health, as well
as by proactively improving its OHS
performance.
During the certification process, Sands
China’s facilities team provided
relevant OHS training to each of the
more than 1,500 team members in the
department. All took an introductory ISO
45001:2018 course, as well as an
internal OHS course that included
modules on topics such as how to safely
work at heights and the proper way to do
manual handling operations, like
lifting, carrying and pulling, in order
to prevent injuries.
Department heads are also sending team
members to attend some of the OHS
courses provided by the Labour Affairs
Bureau, which are offered on topics such
as preventing hearing loss and the safe
use of chemicals, among many others.
Sands China’s ISO 45001:2018
certification covers all Sands China
properties: Sands® Macao, The
Venetian® Macao, The
Plaza® Macao,
Sands® Cotai Central, and The
Parisian Macao.
It was approved in November 2018 after a
successful ISO audit, and the official
certificate was presented to Grant Chum,
chief of staff for Sands China, and Mike
Naylor, senior vice president of
facilities for Venetian Macau Limited,
at a ceremony at Sands Cotai Central on
May 15.
“Sands China is very pleased at the
steady progress we’ve been making across
many business units to achieve ISO
certifications,” said Naylor. “This
latest ISO certification helps ensure
that our facilities team members receive
the best OHS training possible – and
that knowledge not only helps prevent
injuries and other health issues at
work, but in team members’ home lives as
well, improving their general well-being
and quality of life.”
Sands China or its properties already
hold four other ISO certifications:
- ISO 9001:2015 for the quality management of its facilities department
- ISO 20121:2012 for its event sustainability management system
- ISO 9001:2015 for the quality management system of its convention and exhibition services
- ISO 22000:2005 for its food safety management system
ISO certifications are awarded by the
London-based British Standards
Institution (BSI) Group, the world’s
largest national standards and
certification body, which audits and
provides certification to companies
worldwide who implement and comply with
its management systems standards.
