Sands China Encourages Recycling with Clean the Office Campaign
Weeklong effort recycles more than 3,200 kilograms
(Macao,
June
2, 2019) –
Sands China Ltd.
recently ran its Clean the Office campaign
for the fifth consecutive year, encouraging
team members from all departments to bring
recyclable items from the office and from
home to a recycling booth setup at the
company’s back-of-house team member areas.
The May 17-24 sustainability drive was an
initiative of the company’s Sands ECO360
global sustainability strategy, aimed at
increasing team members’ awareness of the
importance of recycling. More than 3,200
kilograms of waste were diverted from
landfills as a result.
For this year’s event, Sands China invited
local SME Taion Environmentalist Recycling &
Regeneration Factory Ltd. to set up a booth
at various times across all Sands China
properties: Sands® Macao, The
Venetian® Macao, The
Plaza® Macao, Sands®
Cotai Central, and The Parisian Macao.
Information about which items could be
brought in for recycling was available
at the booth, which itself was built
from recycled carton paper, and can be
reused for the next campaign. On-site
staff from Taion were available to
answer any recycling-related questions.
Team members were able to drop off a
wide variety of recyclable waste at the
booth, including paper, plastic, metal,
batteries, clothing, and electronics –
everything from aluminium cans and toys,
to toner and ink cartridges, small
household appliances and light bulbs,
among many others.
“Sands China is very pleased that we
were able to work together with Taion
for this year’s Clean the Office,” said
Mark McWhinnie, senior vice president of
resort operations and development for
Sands China Ltd. “It allowed us to
support a local SME while raising our
team members’ environmental awareness
and making it easier for them to recycle
both their home and office waste. The
success of this and other important
ECO360 initiatives continues to have
significant and measurable results
across the company.”
Through the Sands ECO360 global
sustainability strategy of Sands China’s
parent company, Las Vegas Sands Corp.,
Sands China saved over 26 million kWh of
energy in 2018 alone, which is enough
electricity to power more than 65,000
average Macao households for an entire
month. In water conservation, the
company has saved over 150 million
gallons of water since 2014, enough to
fill more than 200 Olympic-sized
swimming pools. The company’s overall
water intensity, which measures how much
water is used per square foot of
property space, has decreased 9 per cent
since 2010. In addition, more than 2,300
tons of food waste has been diverted
since 2014.
The company’s ongoing ECO360 initiatives
are key in helping Sands China maintain
and improve environmentally sustainable
operations. The success of the programme
has earned the company recognition and
certifications for its efforts,
including the Macao SAR government’s
Macau Green Hotel Award for all hotels
at Sands China properties – six in the
Gold category, one Silver, and Macao’s
first-ever Platinum designation for The
Venetian Macao.
