Sands China Donates MOP 1 Million in Scholarships and Fellowships
Donations to six tertiary institutions to benefit 100 local students for 13th consecutive year

For the 13th consecutive
year, Sands China Ltd. has made a donation
to six Macao tertiary institutions for
scholarships and fellowships, continuing its
annual tradition of supporting higher
education in Macao. The MOP 1 million
dollars in total donations was presented to
representatives of the educational
institutions at a cheque presentation
ceremony Sep. 5 at The Venetian®
Macao.
The annual donation is a testament to the
company’s support of local students, in
acknowledgement of the importance of higher
education in nurturing Macao’s
talent.
“Sands China remains committed to investing
in local talent development, which is
crucial for our company and for Macao as a
whole,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of
Sands China Ltd. “We will continue to work
with higher education institutions to
nurture talent in Macao – individuals who
will contribute to our city’s continued
development and diversification as a world
centre of tourism and leisure.”
Wen Hongyan, senior vice president of
human resources for Sands China Ltd.,
said: “The students of today will become
the leaders of tomorrow. We believe in
the importance of investing in the
future of Macao, and have therefore
offered annual scholarships and
fellowship to improve students’
motivation. Sands China will continue to
move with the times and develop
innovative human resource initiatives to
nurture integrated resort
professionals.”
With Thursday’s donation, Sands China’s
total contribution toward scholarships and
fellowships since 2006 now exceeds MOP 10
million, benefitting over 1,200 students to
date. Sands China presented the scholarship
and fellowship cheques to (in no particular
order) Carol Wong, director of the Rector’s
Office of the University of Macau; Kwong
Ying Wa, vice president, and Remus Wong Ka
Weng, head of the Student Affairs Office,
from the Macau University of Science and
Technology; Lei Un, head of the Academic
Affairs Department of the Macao Polytechnic
Institute; Antonio Chu, head of the Student
Affairs Division of the Institute for
Tourism Studies; Fr. Peter Stilwell, rector,
and Teresa Loong, director of the Office for
Student Affairs, from the University of
Saint Joseph; and Dr. Cheng Hing Wan,
president of the Macau Institute of
Management.
The MOP 1 million in donations will be
distributed among 100 students in support of
their studies for the current academic year.
Beneficiary students are chosen based on
their academic performance and financial
status during the previous academic year.
