Macao Liaison Office Lauds Sands China for COVID-19 Relief Efforts
(Macao,
July
16, 2020) –
A delegation led by
Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the
Central People's Government in the Macao
SAR, Yao Jian, visited Sands China’s company
office Thursday, and was warmly received by
company president Dr. Wilfred Wong and other
senior executives. Both parties exchanged
views and ideas on how to support the
anti-pandemic efforts of the central
government and the Macao SAR government, as
well as on how to revive Macao’s
economy.
Yao acknowledged the
contributions made by Sands China amid the
COVID-19 pandemic, and praised the company
for its support of relief efforts in
mainland China and Macao. While there, the
delegation presented a certificate of
appreciation to Sands China, and expressed
its hopes that the company will continue to
cooperate with the SAR government in its
virus prevention and economic recovery work,
while at the same time strengthening the
patriotic spirit of its team
members.
Dr. Wilfred Wong,
president of Sands China Ltd., said: “As a
company rooted in Macao, Sands China
considers it our privilege and duty to help
the mainland and Macao persevere through the
challenges brought on by the current
pandemic. Our company has been able to
utilise our global procurement network to
procure a wide range of COVID-19 relief
items, and our team of dedicated volunteers
has been tirelessly helping distribute many
of these items to local community
organisations during these times of need.
Under the guidance and leadership of the
central government and the SAR government,
we will continue to work together to
safeguard the local community, thereby
contributing to the gradual recovery of
Macao’s
economy.”
The delegation
included officials from the economic affairs
department of the Liaison Office of the
Central People's Government in the Macao
SAR: Director General Chen Guokai and
Director Zuo Xianghua. Among the attendees
at the sharing session were Wen Hongyan,
senior vice president of human resources for
Sands China Ltd.; Charlie Cai, vice
president of procurement and supply chain
for Sands China Ltd.; and Sam Chongnin, vice
president of corporate communications and
community affairs for Sands China
Ltd.
Since the onset of
COVID-19, Sands China has been supporting
relief efforts in the Macao community on
multiple fronts. The company announced in
early February that it would donate MOP 20
million to support the anti-pandemic work in
mainland China; the company allocated
another MOP 5 million to support epidemic
prevention in Macao, including active global
purchasing in the face of a shortage of
relief supplies. Since early February, Sands
China has donated more than 650,000 relief
items to the SAR government, non-profit
associations and guests staying in the
isolated area of the Sheraton Grand Macao
Hotel, provided financial aid for 500
families facing economic hardships, and made
donations to 34 local elderly homes,
rehabilitation homes and drug rehabilitation
centres – benefiting a total of 110,000
people in need. Meanwhile, as part of the
company’s ongoing COVID-19 relief effort for
the Macao community, Sands Cares Ambassadors
have been helping distribute relief items
donated by Sands China to local community
organisations – contributing approximately
1,000 hours of voluntary community
service.
