Sands China Performing Arts Programme presents
Poetic Dance Drama: "The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting" – "A Panorama of Mountains and Rivers"
(Macao, Jul 9, 2024) – In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China and the 25th Anniversary of Macao's Return to the Motherland, Sands China is bringing back the mesmerising Poetic Dance Drama: "The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting" – "A Panorama of Mountains and Rivers." Following the overwhelming response to its Macao debut last year, this captivating performance is taking the stage at The Venetian Theatre July 18-21.
Since its debut in 2021, this remarkable dance show has been presented across more than 60 cities, spanning over 1,000 days and delivering over 500 breathtaking performances.
Following its successful tour in mainland China, the show also made an amazing debut in Macao at The Venetian Theatre last year, with all five shows welcomed by a full-house audience. In addition, its upcoming second tour in Macao has also received remarkable response, as tickets for the July 19 and 21 shows are already sold out due to popular demand.
Part of the Sands China Performing Arts Programme, the show is also a key supported work of the "Stage Art Masterpiece Creation Project Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China." It takes its inspiration from the world-renowned Chinese landscape painting, "A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains," created by Wang Ximeng during the northern Song dynasty period. Through the genre of "poetic dance," this remarkable show takes the audience on a captivating journey through legendary and charming traditional Chinese aesthetics. It seeks to transcend the boundaries of time and space by immersing the audience in a world where characters and emotions come alive. Integrating culture, art, and dance, it provides an unparalleled experience where the audience becomes part of the painting itself.
Dr. Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China Ltd., said: "In celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China and the 25th Anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland, we are immensely pleased to bring back this extraordinary show after the resounding positive response last year. This performance perfectly illustrates how vitality can be injected into the Chinese legacy by blending the genres of painting, dance, and theatre. As Macao celebrates its designation as a Culture City of East Asia 2025, this event holds great significance. It exemplifies Macao's role as a hub for cultural exchange, as the show's Macao tour last year marked its first performance outside the mainland before it ventured into overseas markets. It is a true reflection of Sands China's continuous efforts to contribute to the artistic and cultural development of Macao."
The imagery of Poetic Dance Drama: "The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting" features a striking blue-green palette of colours, while dancers move gracefully and exude a majestic and fluid quality that calls to mind the grandeur of mountain ranges and winding rivers. The poetic nature of their body language, underpinned by original music, costumes, lighting and multimedia design, represents the Song dynasty's aesthetics of simplicity and elegance. The high-tech stage design features multiple turntables within the stage floor and aerial tracks to better present the illusion of interweaving time and space.
Jointly produced by the Palace Museum, the China Oriental Performing Arts Group Co., Ltd., the People's Network, and Usunhome Group, the enthralling dance show has garnered immense acclaim, including winning the prestigious 17th Wenhua Grand Prize. It also achieved the highest box office sales in the Chinese stage performance market in 2022 and 2023.
In 2024, in addition to its successful run in key domestic cities, "The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting" has entertained international audiences in Singapore and Turkey, and has its sights set on Canada, Russia, Japan, and beyond.
Through this and other shows, the Sands China Performing Arts Programme aims to broaden the scope of performing arts in Macao by introducing and promoting premier national, local, and overseas projects.
