Sands China Goes Lights-off for Earth Hour for 17th Straight Year
(Macao, Mar 22, 2025) – For the 17th year in a row, Sands China Ltd. turned off the exterior lights and non-essential indoor lights of all its properties for one hour, in observance of Earth Hour 2025 on Saturday. Sands® Macao, The Venetian® Macao, The Plaza® Macao featuring Four Seasons, The Parisian® Macao, and The Londoner Macao® all went dark in demonstrating Sands China’s commitment to environmental sustainability – joining businesses and individuals around the world to support the annual global event.
In order to amplify the positive effects of the energy-saving movement, Sands China additionally observes Earth Hour every month, a practice it began in 2013. Since then, the company has been turning off the exterior lights, signage and marquees of its resorts for one hour on the first Tuesday of each month.
Sean McCreery, executive vice president of operations for Sands China Ltd., said: “Complementing our ongoing efforts in running ever-increasingly green operations at our properties, our support of Earth Hour is an energy-saving gesture of solidarity with the global community. With 17 years of participation in this initiative, we aim to underscore the urgent need to combat climate change. Let’s dim the lights not just for an hour, but remain mindful year-round of our energy usage as we display this powerful symbol of our ongoing dedication to a brighter, eco-friendly future for generations ahead.”
Sands China added a unique eco-friendly experience this year in the lead up to Earth Hour – a free “Pedal for Your Smoothie” activity March 17-22 at the health clubs of its resorts. Hotel guests and club members pedalled special power-generating stationary bikes connected to a blender to turn kinetic energy into electricity – making a fresh fruit smoothie in the process. The activity demonstrated how creative thinking can integrate energy-saving into numerous areas, such as sports and exercise. It was a fun and meaningful way to drive awareness of energy conservation and experience human-powered clean energy first-hand.
Since 2019, Sands China’s various sustainability measures have resulted in 42 million kWh of energy savings to date, which is enough electricity to charge 700,000 electric vehicles. In 2024, the company’s environmental sustainability achievements included:
- Completing 17 ECOTracker projects with 13,848 MWh of electricity saved
- Achieving carbon neutrality across all properties’ convention and exhibition areas
- Generating 33% of the company’s electricity from renewable energy
- Offsetting the carbon footprint by encouraging Cotai Water Jet’s passengers to purchase carbon credits for their trips through the Sands ECO360 Carbon Neutral Programme
- Obtaining ISO14001 EMS certification for all five properties in Macao
In addition to these impressive achievements, Sands China also earned Top 1% rankings in both the China edition and the Global edition of the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2024, and was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) World for the third consecutive year and DJSI Asia Pacific for the fourth consecutive year.
Sands China’s environmental sustainability efforts are part of the Sands ECO360 global sustainability strategy of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp. Sands ECO360 utilises measures like energy saving, resource recycling, conservation and community engagement to help minimise the company’s environmental impact and lead the way in sustainable building development and resort operations.
